Climbing to the top, 80s style

Face it we’re living in the 1980s. Want proof, then consider this, in 2008 we had:
- Wispas on our shelves
- A Bush in the White House
- A massive economic slump
- Rocky and Rambo movies in the cinema
- A Terminator movie in production (Terminator IV)
- Tight jeans in fashion
- Ricky Astley in full swing
- A Guns N Roses album set for release
- Knight Rider on US TV screens

It’s high time we started giving something back to the decade that keeps on giving, starting with it’s biggest icon, the action hero. In 2009 Jean-Claude Van Damme and Mickey Rourke are set to make testosterone-packed returns to our screens in JCVD and The Wrestler respectively.

Having kicked, punched and grimaced onscreen for over 20 years – while uttering questionable dialogue and navigating a mass of plot holes – the time has come for these hulking dinosaurs to have their day in the sun.

The petition is on and so is the fight for Oscar glory. Let’s make 09 the year when we reach out to our best cinematic resource, the mindless action hero, and pass on a little sense of achievement to those who fight for our entertainment.

As you say, eighties style recession and rising unemployment. Caused by the utterly reckless behaviour of the banks. Which were merrily deregulated by Mrs Thatcher. Can we never shake that bloody woman off?

Tight jeans? They looked obscene on men the first time round and that won't have changed.
