Rodriguez targets Predator reboot

Coming Soon is reporting that Robert 'Grindhouse' Rodriguez is working with 20th Century Fox on a Predator reboot entitled Predators.

Part of a volley of productions which includes "...'Machete', a sci-fi action film called 'Nerverackers'and a couple of smaller movies called 'Sin City 2' and 'The Jetsons"; Rodriguez looks set to become my cult director of choice for at least the next 10 years.

According to Coming Soon "Rodriguez penned a Predator 3 script some time ago that was discarded because it was too big."

For a recap of the man's work to date, here's a taster from the 2007 splatter-fest Planet Terror:

They're actually making Machete? With that guy from Heat, Anchorman, The Replacement Killers, From Dusk Til Dawn, Desperado and any other film that requires a hard-assed Mexican in it? I can't wait.

I recall way back in the mists of time (okay, 2001) a pitch for Predator 3 was doing the rounds which would have starred Dwayne Johnson, then still The Rock*, as the son of Dutch (Arnie in the original) and Anna, the survivors from the original Predator. It might have been great, because Dwayne is excellent in pretty much everything I've seen him in, even Doom. I can't imagine him getting his perfect teeth smashed in like Arnie did, though. I'm sure Rodriguez will deliver the goods and then some. After our recent viewing of AvP2:Requiem, it's clear that a Nolanesque franchise reboot is long overdue.

Looking forward to more on these projects, especially when (if?) Sin City 2 surfaces from development hell.

* He'll always be The Rock, of course.
